Many edge sites have a quiet but persistent problem: workers need a reliable Windows environment to do their jobs, but provisioning and maintaining full PCs or laptops at every endpoint is expensive, inconsistent, and hard to keep clean over time. TekkioDesktop addresses this by moving compute off the endpoint entirely. Instead of running Windows locally, sessions are hosted as virtual machines inside the Tekkio cluster and delivered to the endpoint over RDP. The endpoint itself becomes simple and largely disposable -- an existing PC, a thin client, or anything capable of opening a browser and running an RDP connection.
TekkioDesktop is deliberately not a VDI solution in the traditional sense. It does not attempt to replicate the global remote access, complex security brokering, or thousand-user scale of platforms like Citrix or Omnissa. Instead, it is scoped for the environments where Tekkio already operates -- retail stores, hotels, branch offices -- where a small number of local users need dependable access to a Windows session without the overhead of a full enterprise desktop infrastructure. Because sessions stay entirely within the local cluster and never traverse the internet, the networking stays simple and the attack surface stays small.
Session management is handled by a containerized broker that runs on the cluster and is accessible through a standard web browser. When a user authenticates, the broker locates or creates an available VM session and hands off an RDP configuration file directly to the endpoint. From that point, the connection runs between the endpoint and the VM with no dependency on the broker container itself -- meaning the broker can be moved or restarted without interrupting active sessions. User files are kept separate from the VM through TekkioFS or shared storage, so a session can be destroyed and recreated cleanly without any loss of personal data or settings.
This separation of session state from the endpoint also makes TekkioDesktop well suited for environments where workers move between physical locations throughout the day. A doctor finishing notes in one treatment room can pick up exactly where they left off at a different endpoint down the hall, because the VM stays running on the cluster regardless of which endpoint is connected to it. It is a small detail in the architecture, but in practice it removes one of the more frustrating frictions of working across a physical space -- without requiring any of the complexity typically associated with roaming desktop solutions.
